Our flock of sheep is our passion. Many pleasant hours have been spent shepherding our flock through the neighbourhood. These sheep are the perfect cleanup crew. Whether trimming the grass in the ditch beside the road, mowing between the orchard rows at Luther Marsh Organics or cleaning up fence rows or river banks, these sheep are a hot item in our neighbourhood. Besides the benefit of tidying up the countryside, this diverse diet creates an incredibly nutritious meat!

Shepherding for Health

We firmly believe in farming ethically. We don’t use any drugs, vaccines, growth hormones or GMO feeds on our flock. They are fed a diet of 100% grass, leaves and other forages. Supplemented only with natural minerals to boost overall health. In the winter they are fed a diet of hay (dried forage) and baylage (fermented forage).

Why Genes Matter

Since we started our flock several years ago, we have been focusing on selective breeding for traits that are important to us. Katahdin Hair Sheep are well known for parasite resistance and natural shedding, but here at Meadow Song Acres we take it much further than that. We rigorously select for, health, good mothering instincts, fertility, long life, tendency to produce twins, sturdiness, large, easy fleshing frames, calm disposition, hooves that don’t require trimming, tails that don’t need docking, polled (no horns), parasite resistance and thick smooth coats that shed easily. In return we now have a very hardy flock of sheep that thrive on the lifestyle we give them, without the need of being constantly subjected to pharmaceuticals.

The Rewards

As the years go by our flock is becoming more resilient and less labour intensive. Our flock is becoming more productive and profitable. We enjoy all the chores that go with shepherding, but the highlight at the end of the day is a 100% Grass-Fed Lamb Dinner! Especially when you stop to think about how this lamb was raised, and how it is high in Vitamin A, E, iron, omega-3 fatty acids, and conjugated linoleic acid (CLA). The building blocks of health, all in a delicious meal.
